Personal ThingsNonspecific BioI'm incredibly boring, really. Only my hobbies are interesting, and only to those who share my madnesses. I'm a thirtysomething married mother of one living in the Southwest. I'm in the SCA, and I have been researching and recreating historic costumes from many periods since I was in highschool. I like teaching people about it, but I'm not as good as I'd like to be at doing that, so I mostly write about it on the web and on email lists. I like to call it "costuming tech support" when I coach people by email. I'm computer literate, and have been since 1984. I majored in graphic design in college with the intention of going into advertising, but kept dropping my phys ed classes and therefore never graduated. This caused me to spend several years working in genre bookshops, restaurants and art supply stores. Eventually, my small ability at writing costuming how-tos, combined with a longstanding geekiness, made me into an unqualified technical writer for brief period and then an ISP support tech before the dotcom crash. Later, I spent some time working for a subsidiary of IBM designing icons, plugging product info into templates, and illustrating gripping tech manuals. Having gone to art school, I am a necessarily a formerly funny-haired goth-punk-artfag person, and I have peculiar tastes in music. REALLY peculiar. These days, I don't think I have a label. While I can still tell you how to "Siouxie-fy" your hair for a week, these days I am much more of a DIY-everything girl, including carpentry and baking bread. I look forward to eventually re-entering the workplace and again pushing pixels for pay. If you must poke me in the eye about my politics, they are here.
